As the forklift evolved during the 1960s and 1970s, the pallet became a critical component of our U.S. industrial product storage and shipping processes. During this time, recent college graduates Joe Smith and John Heller joined a company in the lumber sales business that quickly evolved into a pallet sales business, connecting pallet manufacturers with pallet users throughout the Midwest.
In 1990, Heller and Smith believed they could achieve success by combining their experience with a culture where all employees embraced an entrepreneurial spirit and placed a high emphasis on developing excellent mill relationships while achieving a higher level of personal satisfaction in their work lives. In July 1990, they formed H&S Forest Products, Inc. to achieve this goal.
Company growth was achieved through outstanding service provided to industry and professional contacts. At the end of 1996, H&S had nine employees.
Bill Biersteker, an industry veteran who had worked with Heller and Smith, joined H&S in 1997 and became a co-owner in 1999. By the end of 2001, H&S had grown to 16 employees.
John Romelfanger, a CPA involved with a startup bank from 1990 to 2007, managed the bank’s relationship with H&S. After several years of discussions with the owners of H&S, John joined H&S in June 2007 and became a co-owner in December 2007 through the purchase of Smith’s ownership interest.
Today, H&S has its headquarters in Dublin, Ohio, with 19 employees and sales consultants located throughout the Midwest, South and Southeast. H&S serves customers in more than 30 states and partners with more than 150 different wooden packaging manufacturers. H&S employees have more than 200 years combined experience in the wooden pallet and packaging industry, and they are trained in pallet design, using Pallet Design System® (PDS) software. H&S is also a member of the National Wooden and Pallet Container Association.
